    Jean-Paul Gaultier-Designs that Shock/Scents that Surprise

    History of Jean-Paul Gaultier’s Career

    Jean-Paul Gaultier is an unconventional designer from France. His fashion career began back in 1970 when noted fashion designer Pierre Cardin took a chance on this completely untrained, yet talented designer hiring him on as an assistant. In 1976 his first individual collection was released, but it was in 1981 that he began to display his true nature and what would now be considered his characteristic irreverent designs. Playing on themes such as gender confusion and using untraditional types, such as tattooed and pierced men or full figured woman, as models earned him both considerable criticism and growing popularity. He is particularly well known for designing the costumes for pop superstar Madonna’s Blond Ambition Tour where she sported a cone-shaped bra.

    Gaultier Makes the Move to Fragrance Design

    Jean-Paul Gaultier perfume added the title of discount perfume designer to his résumé with the release of his first women’s fragrance originally named for the designer discount perfume and later renamed “Classique” to distinguish it from his other scents. The fragrance is a floral–oriental with notes of Orange Flower, Bulgarian Rose, Italian Mandarin, Star Aniseed, Orchid, Iris, Ylang–Ylang, Indian Ginger, Soft Vanilla, Woody Amber and can be described as fun and sexy. The bottle is shaped as a woman’s upper torso in a corset, mirroring the essence of Gaultier’s clothing designs and true to his irreverent attitude the bottles were packages in cans rather than the traditional cardboard boxes most perfumers use.

    Gaultier Continues to Test the Limits with His Fragrances

    Jean-Paul Gaultier perfume designed his next fragrance in 1995 for men and called it Le Mâle. To date it is still one of the top selling men’s fragrances in Europe and holds a strong position in the markets of the United States and Australia, as well. His third fragrance called Fragile did not fair quite so well and has limited distribution these days. In 2006 Gaultier released a unisex fragrance called Gaultier² which he dubbed the “fragrance for humanity”. His latest men’s fragrance, Fleur du Mâle contains notes of Orange Blossom, Petitgrain Leaf, Coumarin, and Fern Accord and although the name means flowers of men, it is described as being a 100% masculine fragrance. The men’s fragrances have the shape of a man’s torso with the Le Mâle in a turquoise striped tank top and the Fleur du Mâle in a pure white bottle.

    Conclusion

    Jean-Paul Gaultier started his fashion career in an unconventional way and never changed his method of operation. His designs continue to shock and amaze critics and fans alike. Although his first fragrance didn’t get the rave reviews he had hoped for, Jean-Paul Gaultier perfume continued to design unique bottles and new fragrances. His first men’s fragrance, Le Mâle was his first big success and continues to sell well today. From cone shaped bras, half dressed women and tattooed male models, Gaultier has pushed the limits and defined himself as an unconventional designer. There is little doubt that he will continue to push the envelope and express his “bad boy” ways through his future clothing and fragrance designs.
